Darker Roasted Coffees

A selection of estate coffees given a darker roast to release more sugars and slightly neutralise the acidity naturally found in coffee. Darker roasts are most suitable, though not exclusively, for espresso based coffees and for those who like to drink their coffee without milk or cream.

Ecuador Vilcabamba 'Valley of Longevity'    £3.50
 100g
The cultivation of coffee has a long tradition for the people of Vilcabamba. Julia Avelina Leon, now 97 years of age, is a grandmother many times over and has a great passion for the precious bean: “If I couldn’t drink coffee, one of the most beautiful things in my life would be missing.” On the mountain slopes of this magical place, the small farmers of Vilcabamba grow the very best Arabica coffees. For them this drink is a small luxury. During the harvest, between June and October, the families pick the ripe, red cherries and clean the beans in the water of the nearby Mountain Rivers. Then the coffee is slowly sun dried and hand sorted. Thus a coffee of extraordinary quality is created. This is not a really dark roast coffee but just into the territory we like for espresso. Darker than medium but not so dark that the oils start showing on the bean.
 Zimbabwe Yellow Bird    £3.50

 Tanzanian Kibo Chagga Dark    £4.20

 Malawi Peaberry Dark    £4.60

This peaberry bean rivals the quality and characteristics found in the world beating coffees of Kenya, whilst luckily also being a little more economical. East African coffees are famous for their sweet berry acidity and silky body, which when darkly roasted turns into a dark chocolate bittersweet character. It is great drunk black and makes a most characterful and exciting espresso.
