Black Teas
The whole range of these handmade teas deserves to be tried. They are intriguingly varied in character but are all surprisingly rich, sweet and malty with subtle chocolatey undertones and make wonderful breakfast teas. Amongst them you will find teas seldom seen outside of China and batches made to our specific specification. Most of them are suitable for taking with milk but are equally at home without. The brewing procedure is quite different though, depending which method you opt for. If you take them with milk brew them like an Assam, for between 5-7 minutes. If you prefer it without milk, brew for two minutes and then using the same leaves you can brew once or twice again. The difference in flavour is most beguiling.

| This tea treasure is from the fertile gardens in the high mountains that cross the borders between the famous tea growing provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian. The tightly twisted, shiny black leaf with fine golden tips gives a deliciously sweet, exceptionally malty flavoured drink with hints of fruit. Natural growing methods are another bonus to this very rare tea, the total crop being only 200kgs picked around April and May. It is made entirely by hand from young tips that are withered, twisted, oxidised then dried and shaped before the final sorting is done. |

| This is the best grade of the black teas called Fuchow, hence the name 'Monkey King'. You can tell from its appearance with the abundant tips and golden hairs that it will be a rich, smooth tea with a complex character. It is predominantly malty in character with notes of cocoa and according to some of our customers a hint of ginger. That is the beauty of great Chinese black teas, they seem to taste different each time you make them. It is produced in the mountains of Fujian province and can only be created on a few days of the year and in very small quantities. Extremely exclusive and a current Imperial favourite. |

| This Jin Jun Mei is currently the second most expensive black tea in China, with shops selling the higher grade for prices up to $1600 for 100g. It has soared in both popularity and cost since it was created in 2005 by Mr. Jiang Yuan Xun, the general manager of Wu Yi Zheng Shan tea company. Whilst accompanying some guests on a visit to the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian, famous for Oolong teas, some wild tea bushes were discovered growing at over 1800 metres altitude in the Wuyi Nature Reserve. The guest suggested making some black tea so the harvested buds were sent to Tongmu village where the first black tea, Lapsang Souchong was created 300 years before. The famous tea master Mr. Liang Junde took upon the task of making the new tea himself, using a process similar to the traditional Lapsang Souchong but eliminating the distinctive smoking process. This leaves the tea to develop a complex character, with aromas of fruit, flower and honey and malt. Part of the reason for the high price of this tea, though ultimately not the majority of its price!, is that it will take over twenty, skilled farmers a whole day to collect enough shoots to make just a few hundred grams of tea. The artful hands of the tea master are then set to work for another labour intensive part of the manufacturing process. The tea we are selling is from the early March picking, before the Qing Ming or Tomb Sweeping Festival, the time when most of the famous teas from China are made. The delicate, twisted leaves, with a high concentration of golden tips, are smaller than many other gold tipped teas. It has a beautiful appearance, both in the leaf and in the infusion, which has a clear, sweetish flavour that delivers the promised notes of honey and fruit. We can also supply the highest grade Jin Jun Mei to order for an approximate price of £550 for an original 100g tin. |

| This very rare tea is grown in the Qimen, or Keemun county of China’s Anhui Province. It is grown on a variety of bush that in early spring sprouts long, tender golden buds. It is one of China’s famous ‘Gongfu’ teas, which means made with great skill. The resulting tea is wonderfully smooth with a honeysweet, orchid aroma and gentle, sweet chocolate, malty tones with hints of rose. The leaves have a lovely black bloom and the infusion is a clear and brilliant red. |

| Like our other Keemun teas, this is the genuine article grown around Lion Mountain in Qimen County. This is in the breathtaking Huangshan area of Anhui Province, home to many famous teas. | This is one of the rarest and finest of China's black teas, indeed the world's. It is a tea master produced, organically grown, long tender leaf variety from the Lion Mt. in Qi'Men with a light bodied, honeysweet, chocolate malt infusion. It is a tea with a pronounced flavour yet with very little tannin and makes a good afternoon or early evening tea. It is made with the first golden down covered buds of spring, full of nutrition, picked before the Chinese Qing Ming festival. To put this wonderful tea's rarity into context it would make just 200,000 of the U.K's yearly consumption of 60,225,000,000 cups! Remember this is just the U.K, my calculator didn't have enough digits to work out the world's! We can never get enough of this tea to last the year so try it while you can. |
