This relative of the Holly bush is found growing wild, high on the beautiful island of Hainan. To make this highest grade requires great skill, making it similar to the very best green teas, a worker can make only 500g in one day. It contains a similar amount of caffeine to green tea and is closely related to the Yerbamate drink in its wonderful kick. As well as its unusual shape it is interesting for the many health benefits associated with it. According to the Chinese Medical Dictionary its functions include: relieving thirst, clearing away heat and toxins, stabilising the metabolism, easing tiredness, reducing hypertension, obesity and soothing sore throats. It is claimed to be of particular benefit to those with high blood pressure, high lipids and diabetes. Modern scientific research shows the tea to contain more than ten kinds of amino acid, essential fatty acids, vitamins B & C, organic germanium, natural selenium, among other beneficial trace elements. It's extraordinary appearance is matched by its unique flavour. 2-3 pieces in a cup gives an infusion at first pleasantly bitter followed by a surprising sweetness that hints at liquorice root. The shape also makes it ideal for taking out to work or when travelling.

I have been drinking this tea (at least one cup per day) for about 5 years now since trying out the original when visiting China.
I find it a very pleasant, refreshing drink but only use one piece per cup once. If used more than once,I find find it is diluted and loses it taste. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars]

What an interseting brew. Astringent yes, especially if too strong, but brilliantly refreshing. Each tongue unfurls and is transformed when brewed. One is enough to make several cups, and 2 to a pot may be enough for a couple of refills.
