Selimbong was founded in 1886 and is widely known for its fully aromatic, mild, mellow and fruity autumnal teas. This is from the top of the autumn harvest which follows the summer monsoons. It is located at an altitude of 1400metres and is situated just 25km from Tiger Hill where tourists flock to see each days breathtakingly beautiful sunrise. Mount Everest, looming in the background, looks impassively on. Known as "Silbung" to locals, it produces exquisite Darjeeling teas. Connoisseurs world-wide, eagerly await Selimbong's Second Flush teas. The garden has won the prestigious Tea Board of India award for quality. They have adopted Bio-Dynamic practices and are certified Bio-Dynamic by Demeter International, Germany since 1998. They also grow many herbs at Selimbong like Yarrow, Camomile, Valerian and Stinging Nettle to prepare the biodynamic solutions. Biodynamic practices in Selimbong Tea Garden have given excellent results and can be visibly appreciated. The estate manager says they have found that tea plants have a rhythm and respond decisively to lunar cycles. A waning moon - with weak sap flow and root centred plant activity - is ideal for transplanting, pruning, composting and cultivating. An ascending moon - when plant forces flow strongly upward - is ideal for sowing seeds, harvesting and applying liquid manure. As tea is a monoculture, Biodynamic agriculture is the solution for a healthy vibrant garden.
