This is a lovely sencha tea with added roasted brown rice which gives it a smoky complexity and a bit of body compared with plain sencha. During the roasting process some of the brown rice ‘pops’ leaving tiny pop-corn-like kernels amongst the loose tea which looks very attractive. My Japanese friends tell me that the flavour of genmai cha is one of the many things they miss when travelling abroad, so much so they often take it with them to satisfy their craving for it. It’s a bit like the Brits taking PG Tips abroad because they can’t get a ‘decent cup of tea in foreign places’! I suspect the sencha used in making genmai cha is a lower quality variety because it lacks that ‘umami’ one can taste in premium sencha, but that’s probably a good thing otherwise the flavours would be swamped and confused.
In conclusion, I highly recommend genmai cha for everyday drinking especially if you’re fed up of other tasteless green teas.
