Darker Roasted Coffee

Darker roasted coffee, buy coffee online, coffee beans | Imperial Teas

A selection of estate coffees given a darker roast to release more sugars and slightly neutralise the acidity naturally found in coffee. Darker roasts are most suitable, though not exclusively, for espresso based coffees and for those who like to drink their coffee without milk or cream.

  1. Brazilian Ipanema Espresso de Sol Coffee

Brazilian Ipanema Espresso de Sol Coffee

This is a coffee of great complexity, with cupping notes observed by SCAA cuppers that included: great body, zest, almond, walnut, honey, caramel, sweet citrus, star fruit, floral aromas and chocolate. We buy this amazing coffee from the Ipanema Estate Premier Cru programme. It set out to produce the highest scoring coffees in the world and the micro lots they are making score consistently in the 90's, a rare achievement for any coffee from anywhere. This current batch is made on the Fazenda Rio Verde farm on the Ipanema estate. This unique lot is processed using the ‘natural’ sun-dried method, although they also produce fine coffee by the ‘wet’ method. Sun drying ensures the sweetest flavours. Enjoyable made using any method it arguably makes the best espresso coffee of any origin. It can be blended with our lighter roast version of this coffee 'Espirito de Sol' to add nuance and for personalising your perfect espresso blend. One thing very few people argue with is that you have the best coffee for making espresso in the world however you blend it. Our 2kg batch roaster ensures it is to perfection for espresso giving a sweet, syrupy cup with lots of interesting nuances, a full-bodied, intense liquor with fruity cocoa notes that linger on the palate. Artisan roasted in our 2kg micro-coffee roaster. Rio Verde is in the Mantiqueira Mountains, translated as the Crying Mountains. Learn More

  2. The Dark Destroyer Coffee

    The Dark Destroyer Coffee

Our most caffeine laden bean, roasted in the inferno of hell. It's a real wake me up call that will invigorate or derange you. Don't say we didn't warn you! Made with the same highest quality Robusta coffee as our Vietnam Dragon Balls but given a slightly darker roast. This enhances the bittersweet dark chocolate, malty character whilst losing some of the herbal and fruity notes. Learn More

  3. Vietnam Dragon Balls Coffee

    Vietnam Dragon Balls Coffee

This special, premium robusta type coffee has a super thick liquor, dark chocolate body and flavour plus more than average caffeine! It has almost twice as much caffeine as the Arabica variety. Enjoyable in its pure form and useful to add a kick to your favourite espresso blend. Whilst Robusta coffees are not generally renowned for their fine flavour this treasure from Vietnam is a noticeable exception. It is particularly delicious when made with condensed milk. Our customers have really taken to this coffee and it is now among our most popular. It certainly lives up to its name! Artisan roasted in our 2kg micro-roaster. Learn More

  4. Natural Mountain Water Decaf Coffee Dark

Natural Mountain Water Decaf Coffee Dark

If you give this coffee to someone without telling them it’s decaffeinated you will always be greeted with the same look of astonishment when they find out! Firstly because we apply the same criteria for excellence to the coffee we choose to decaffeinate as we do to all of our Grand Cru coffees. Expect flavours of dark chocolate, raisin, plum, liquorice, malt, black cherry and tobacco. Secondly, the method of decaffeination is designed to remove only the caffeine and not the precious flavour compounds that give coffee its character. The Mountain Water Process involves immersing the coffee beans in water to extract the 99.9% of the caffeine. No chemicals are used, and a filtering process allows the beans to maintain their characteristic flavour. The Mountain Water Decaf process uses clear, pure water from the glaciers of the Pico de Orizaba Mountains in Mexico, although often the coffee we choose is not in itself Mexican. This dark roast makes a phenomenally good espresso or base for a latté and cappuccino. Learn More

  5. Rwanda Gorilla Mountain Coffee

    Rwanda Gorilla Mountain Coffee

As with other fine African coffees, the coffee taster’s lexicon is put to good use in describing the character. Notes of blackberry, baking spices, caramel, cranberry, raisins, berries, citrus, cream, lemon, strawberry, grapefruit, floral, cherry, vanilla, caramel, tangy orange, berry jam, lavender, honey, sweet black cherry and figs are described. Rwandan coffee is not mass produced as we know it in the west. It is known as the land of a thousand hills. Many farmers grow their produce on hillsides and within lush, untamed valleys on very smallholdings. Learn More

  6. Kenya Black Lion Coffee

    Kenya Black Lion Coffee

No collection of coffee would be complete without a prizewinning offering from Kenya. It delivers value for money for the aroma alone! Given a dark roast, expect the flavours to suggest treacle toffee, molasses, black cherry, caramel, red wine, plum, dark chocolate, muscovado sugar and dried apricot. Our Kenya coffee is grown by the smallholder farmers of the Bisembe co-operative in Kisii County, a mountainous region of western Kenya famed for evergreen farms. Recently, coffee from this co-operative won the Specialty Coffee Association’s Blind Cupping Competition, scoring 98 out of 100. Learn More

  7. Nicaraguan Black Bull Reserva Coffee

    Nicaraguan Black Bull Reserva Coffee

Hacienda Sajonia produces very high-quality coffee generally but in our search for coffee perfection, we like to go one step further. To this end, the estate produces a small amount of their absolute best beans called Sajonia Reserva Familia. We think it yields one of the best darkly roasted coffees in the world. Darkly roasted coffees tend to trade the nuances of aroma for the big, bold character and the bittersweet, syrupy cup demanded by those who love very intense coffee. The Reserva offers something more though, with tones of rich, milk chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, Brazil nut, orange zest and molasses. Hacienda Sajonia is located in the beautiful El Diablo nature reserve high up in the relatively cool, cloud forest-clad mountains between Matagalpa and Jinotega in northern Nicaragua, placing it right in the middle of Nicaragua’s premier coffee growing region. The estate covers an area of 1,000 acres, of which over half is primaeval rainforest, home to an incredible array of flora and fauna. Learn More

  8. Peru Treasure of the Andes Coffee

Peru Treasure of the Andes Coffee

When sourcing coffee from Peru we look for coffee that can deliver a complex array of flavours. Typically we would hope to find notes of cream, caramel, lemon zest, marzipan, dark chocolate, pineapple, lemon, lime, pomegranate, bergamot, nutmeg, blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry, cane sugar and cocoa. We buy from different producers in Peru depending on quality and availability. They are all from worker’s co-operatives and where organic, sustainable farming methods are used. In fact, that is quite easy as I am yet to see an offer of coffee from Peru that is not produced in this way. Recently we have been supporting the Cafe Femenino project. Learn More

Dark Side of the Moon Coffee

We buy from different plantations according to the best quality available and only from those scoring 88 and above according to the SCAA cupping criteria. Learn More
