Matcha tea is a super fine green tea powder famous for its use in Japanese and Buddhist tea ceremonies. It is created from the famous 'Gyokuro' shaded green teas of Japan. As tea fans (my apologies to our coffee only customers!) you will be well aware of the alleged health benefits of drinking tea. I am often asked which tea is the best in this regard and whilst my main interest is in the art and pleasure of drinking it, I thought I would collate some scientific information to help those interested find out for themselves. Most of the research done into green tea stems from Japan and the teas grown there. Whilst it would appear that they are mostly high in the nutrients believed to offer benefits to health, one in particular stands out and also happens to be a tea that can be consumed in its entirety. Matcha, historically connected with the Art of Tea through the Japanese tea ceremony can also be used in more versatile ways. Gyokuro, from which Matcha is made is cultivated by covering tea plants with black bamboo curtains several weeks prior to harvest, increasing the chlorophyll content and reducing tannin. The harvested leaves are dried and ground into matcha powder on a special, granite mill stone set. It takes an hour to grind just 40g of tea. Health Benefits Matcha green tea delivers the highest concentration of green tea antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibres compared to all other mainstream beverages. Matcha is rich in Vitamin C, E, theanine (amino acids), polyphenols and dietary fibre. The advantage of drinking matcha tea is that it provides 100% of the health benefits found in Japanese Green Tea. When teas are steeped, only 5% to 10% of the nutrients naturally found in the tea ends up in the cup. Most of the nutrients are not fully water-soluble. Some of the minerals, fibres, vitamins, and antioxidants end up being thrown out with the tea leaves. Of course with Matcha, you consume the leaves so the complete nutrient profile of the leaf is available. Antioxidant Benefits Containing 10-15 times the amount of polyphenols, catechins and CGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) found in even the most premium green teas Matcha is considered responsible for a whole host of healthy benefits. When compared to other rich antioxidant foods such as prunes and blueberries, Matcha proves to have more than 20 times the antioxidant power of those foods. * Increases energy * Improves mental alertness and reduces stress * Boosts metabolism * "Anti-Aging" * Lowers blood pressure and "bad"cholesterol * "Super" cancer-fighting and cancer-preventative activity * Stabilizes blood sugar * Powerful anti-biotic and anti-viral activity It can also be used to make cakes or biscuits, or simply sprinkled on ice cream!
