Taiwanese Tea

Taiwanese Teas | Imperial Teas

An interesting variety of high quality teas are grown on the island of Taiwan on Chinese bushes planted three hundred years ago. The most famous of which are the type known as 'Oolong'. These partially oxidised teas with gentle, smooth and rounded liquor and alleged health benefits offer varied characteristics to their Chinese counterparts. This is partly due to the island's famous 'Yellow' soil and many micro-climates but also to the impeccable care taken to process the leaves and the great variety of strains of tea bush used. They are split into two types, 'Amber' which produce a darker though very smooth infusion and 'Jade', which are greener and can be brewed many times over. Both are exquisite teas with characters ranging from subtle floral notes to hints of fruit flavours and aromas and are very relaxing. Although some of these teas fetch some of the highest prices in the world they are surprisingly economical as they can be rebrewed 7-8 times! Taiwan produces the best oolong tea in the world. It's unique growing environment is due to both its geographical position and its mountainous terrain. This year I have also been introduced, by Taiwan's premier grower, to some delightful and little known 'Black' and 'White' teas and can very much recommend giving them a try. I have also learned this year that Taiwan's tea culture, varieties and history are worthy of a book to themselves and have opened up a whole new voyage of discovery for myself. Anyway, our collection truly contains the best teas of each type found in Taiwan and until we recently imported them, only to be found in Taiwan.

  1. Jin Xuan Golden Lily

    Jin Xuan Golden Lily

    Prizewinning farmer Gau-Bin Zhan who has won the ‘Excellent Farmer’ award many years in a row makes this new tea. His tea garden is located in Juhshan town ship in Nantou County. Using his finest, summer crop ‘Jin Xuan’ tea cultivar leaves, normally destined to make finest Oolong tea, he has created a tea with a unique character. Jin Xuan is famous for its creamy, milk like aroma, which complements the rich body and transfers into the flavour with a caramel taste. Hints of honey and frankincense add to the intriguing, complex charm of this special tea. As well as being rich in flavour it is also heavy with theaflavins, exhibited after cooling, when they emulsify to create a milky appearance. Jin Xuan translates as Golden Day Lily and this tea is as fragrant as the flower, with a fruity, floral lingering finish. Learn More

  2. Fo Shou Buddha's Hand

    Fo Shou Buddha's Hand

    This hand picked tea is processed skilfully by hand to produce its elegant shape. Just a 20kg batch was made of this delicious tea, one of my real favourites, on a farm on the Mirror Mountain of Taiwan. It is the best batch of this tea I have ever tasted. It has a strong red grape aroma in the dry leaves with a raisin like flavour in the cup that also carries subtle notes of bergamot and mint. Learn More

    In addition to Fog Island Japanese Sencha and Chinese Pu Erh teas, which are currently being exposed to much ado in the press regarding their alleged benefits to weight loss, I have added my favourite, and I believe healthiest of teas, Gabalong 'Blue' Oolong. With the final addition of our Tea of Life White Tea for good measure, if there is anything in the health aspect of tea, we should have it covered here! The tea flavour is a mellow mix, with the distinctive note of caramel and vanilla of the Gabalong tea in the foreground.     The beautiful fragrance of Rose has long been used to impart a special flavour to tea, with which it shares some characteristics. We’ve chosen a high mountain Oolong tea as the base for this distinguished blend. The flavour lingers for an age on the palate with a long, sweetness that intensifies with each mouthful and even more so as it cools. The colour of the liquor is a deep yellow.     Without a doubt, my favourite black tea. It is delicious without milk but more so with! This hand picked tea is also processed skilfully by hand to produce its elegant spiral shape. Just 500kgs are made a year due to the fact it is made from leaves that have been bitten by tiny insects. This only happens for a couple of weeks in the early summer. It is the damage done to the leaf and the secretions from the leaf to repair itself that give the tea its sweet, honeylike flavour.     Oriental Beauty Oolong Silver Medal Winner

    This has perhaps more honey like flavours than the other types we have, or at least a richer, honey quality. It has as you would expect, notes of ripe fruit and flowers. A little greener in fragrance too, maybe a little pine like. In common with the other types, made in the ‘Gong Fu’ style, the beautiful leaves will yield up to ten infusions. This was a 'Silver' Medal Competition winner in the annual competition held in Miaoli, assuring a very high price for the growers hard and skilled work. Learn More
