Taiwanese Tea

Taiwanese Teas | Imperial Teas

An interesting variety of high quality teas are grown on the island of Taiwan on Chinese bushes planted three hundred years ago. The most famous of which are the type known as 'Oolong'. These partially oxidised teas with gentle, smooth and rounded liquor and alleged health benefits offer varied characteristics to their Chinese counterparts. This is partly due to the island's famous 'Yellow' soil and many micro-climates but also to the impeccable care taken to process the leaves and the great variety of strains of tea bush used. They are split into two types, 'Amber' which produce a darker though very smooth infusion and 'Jade', which are greener and can be brewed many times over. Both are exquisite teas with characters ranging from subtle floral notes to hints of fruit flavours and aromas and are very relaxing. Although some of these teas fetch some of the highest prices in the world they are surprisingly economical as they can be rebrewed 7-8 times! Taiwan produces the best oolong tea in the world. It's unique growing environment is due to both its geographical position and its mountainous terrain. This year I have also been introduced, by Taiwan's premier grower, to some delightful and little known 'Black' and 'White' teas and can very much recommend giving them a try. I have also learned this year that Taiwan's tea culture, varieties and history are worthy of a book to themselves and have opened up a whole new voyage of discovery for myself. Anyway, our collection truly contains the best teas of each type found in Taiwan and until we recently imported them, only to be found in Taiwan.

  1. Ice Peak Classic Taiwan Oolong Tea

Ice Peak Classic Taiwan Oolong Tea

The infusion is sweet with a lingering taste malty taste and a fragrance reminiscent of orchard fruits and high mountain pines. Due to its slightly higher roasting the green flavours found in other Jade Oolong changes to a fruitier character. One of the interesting ways careful processing can bring out desired characteristics from the same raw leaves. Learn More

  2. Royal Rose Taiwan Oolong Tea

    Royal Rose Taiwan Oolong Tea

The beautiful fragrance of Rose has long been used to impart a special flavour to tea, with which it shares some characteristics. We’ve chosen a high mountain Oolong tea as the base for this distinguished blend. The flavour lingers for an age on the palate with a long, sweetness that intensifies with each mouthful and even more so as it cools. The colour of the liquor is a deep yellow. I particularly enjoy it in the early evening. The jade oolong used to make this tea is grown at 1800 metres. Learn More

  3. Ice Peak Evergreen Taiwan Oolong Tea

Ice Peak Evergreen Taiwan Oolong Tea

This oolong is grown in the Deer Valley in Taiwan's Nantou County, close to the famous Dong Ding or Tung Ting Peak. This is from the premium spring flush and so yields a fresh, floral green or a 'Jade' style oolong. There is a butteriness in the aroma and cup due to its light oxidation, which also brings a Camellia and Lilac flavour out of the tea. Oolong tea like green tea is rich in healthy polyphenols which remove free radicals from the body. Chinese doctors also recommend it for helping to control obesity by activating the enzyme responsible for dissolving triglyceride (fatty deposits) and enhancing the function of fat metabolism. Of course more important than this is that it makes a delightful cup of tea! Learn More

  4. Deer Valley Gabalong Oolong

    Deer Valley Gabalong Oolong

This Gabalong oolong tea has almost twice as much GABA content than is required to be classified as Gaba tea. It has an incredibly rich flavour in the cup. Notes of caramel toffee are complemented by the ripe fruit flavours like cooked apples. There are also hints of chocolate and mountain flower notes that flicker in the cup as it cools. A healthy and delicious tea! Learn More

  5. Milky Gabalong Oolong Tea

    Milky Gabalong Oolong Tea

This Gabalong Oolong tea is grown on an organic farm in Nantou, Taiwan and has almost twice as much GABA content than is required to be classified as Gaba tea. It is made from leaves picked in the 'Deer Valley' in Taiwan. It has an incredibly rich flavour in the cup. Notes of caramel toffee are complemented by the ripe fruit flavours like cooked apples. There are also hints of chocolate and mountain flower notes that flicker in the cup as it cools. This is in turn enhanced by adding milk flavouring to give the distinctive, creamy cup 'Milk' oolong is desired for. The special processing of this oolong tea raises the levels of GABA up to forty times that found in other high-quality teas and it has the most Gaba content of all teas. GABA is allegedly good for us. Among the well-researched alleged benefits are lowering of blood pressure (do not take if you have clinically low hypotension) and prevention of cell mutation. Increased levels of human growth hormone, which can help burn fat, eliminate cellulite, improve energy levels, cardiac output, skin elasticity, memory, endurance and bone mass. Taken one hour before bedtime it enables a deeper sleep and aids relaxation. Learn More

  7. Fo Shou Buddha's Hand Black Tea

Fo Shou Buddha's Hand Black Tea

This hand-picked tea is processed skilfully by hand to produce its elegant shape. Just a 20kg batch was made of this delicious tea, one of my real favourites, on a farm on the Mirror Mountain of Taiwan. This is the best batch of this tea I have ever tasted. It has a strong red grape aroma in the dry leaves with a raisin-like, sweet, creamy flavour in the cup that also carries subtle notes of bergamot, mint, lilac and nutmeg. Learn More

  8. Honey Hon Cha Black Tea

    Honey Hon Cha Black Tea

Without a doubt, my favourite black tea. It is delicious without milk but more so with! This hand picked tea is also processed skilfully by hand to produce its elegant spiral shape. Just 500kgs are made a year due to the fact it is made from leaves that have been bitten by tiny insects. This only happens for a couple of weeks in the early summer. It is the damage done to the leaf and the secretions from the leaf to repair itself that give the tea its sweet, honeylike flavour. Most of this type of tea is made into the famous 'Oriental Beauty', also known as Dong Fang Mei Ren. Learn More

  9. Honey Mountain Royal Gue Fei Taiwan Oolong Tea

Honey Mountain Royal Gue Fei Taiwan Oolong Tea

I had often imagined a tea being made that could combine my two favourite oolong teas into one. I also imagined it would be impossible. I'm sure you will imagine how thrilled I am that someone has done it! Our supplier in Taiwan made this tea in the summer as an experiment. Needless to say, it is a resounding success! Whilst, not an ‘Oriental Beauty’ tea it has much in common, sharing the need for insects to bite the leaves. Naturally, it too has the beautiful honey, fruit and floral character found in ‘Oriental Beauty’ but also some of the buttery, green and cooler flavours found in a top 'Jade' Oolong. It differs from other 'Oriental Beauty' teas for some important reasons. Firstly, it is grown in a different place and much higher up the mountain at 1500 metres. Learn More
