TEA

Tea, high quality tea, green tea, black tea | Imperial Teas

Our range of tea is chosen from thousands of samples sent to us each year from the producing countries around the world. No speciality worthy of the name passes us by and often we are the exclusive stockists in this country, if not Europe, of the world's finest and most rare varieties. We now have a special relationship with growers and their agents in the country of origin and this gives us access to teas picked on as little as one morning of the year in the greatest tea gardens of the world and even teas that are grown only for us by special order. This also enables us to keep a good supply as demand for unusual teas has grown over the past ten years and there is fiercer competition for the limited stock. These rare teas are part of our range of over four hundred types. In offering so many, teas that standing on their own would seem like one of the most precious things in the world can slip by unnoticed. We urge you to be as experimental as possible and to take time to discover and enjoy the little gems gracing our shelves.

Tea cultivation is as complex, if not more so than wine producing, so it should not be a surprise to see so many varieties on offer. Great variation in quality and flavour exist, even from the same bush in the same garden! These variations are a result of many things such as climatic conditions, soil type, time of year, how the leaves are picked and as importantly, how they are processed. It is a perfect balance of nature and nurture. Despite this almost boundless choice, most of the tea drunk in this country is blended to remove these unique characteristics and provide a homogenised product where choice is limited to which shape of teabag you prefer! Although as a nation we are one of the largest tea consumers it is widely acknowledged that nearly all of the tea imported into Britain is of the poorest quality imaginable. For the past 25 years we are pleased, with your support and enthusiasm, to have played a small part in changing this.

  1. Jeju Woojeon Korean Green Tea

    Jeju Woojeon Korean Green Tea

The glowing, bottle green cup has a rich scent with a fresh, grassy, sweet and almost hazelnut taste experience. This organically cultivated tea comes from the volcanic island of Jeju, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tea gardens have almost perfect conditions for producing high-quality tea, shrouded in cloud, a mild climate and mineral-rich soil. ‘Woojeon’ means "before it rains", because the harvest takes place before the spring rain sets in. King of Ginseng Oolong Tea

  3. Long Jing Dragon Well Green Tea

Long Jing Dragon Well Green Tea

Long Jing, also known as 'Dragon Well' has a full, sweet and aromatic flavour with a cleansing quality that reflects the natural way it is grown. It takes between 70 to 80,000 leaf and bud sets to make just 1kg. From Shi (Lion’s) Feng Peak you can see a beautiful picture of fertile soil, flowing streams, dense trees, green bamboos dancing on the breeze and patches of tea gardens with clouds lingering around them. 4. Metabolism Booster Wellbeing Blend

    Metabolism Booster Wellbeing Blend

A blend combining the three teas, which are currently being exposed to much ado in the press regarding their alleged benefits to weight loss. It is made up of a Chinese Oolong called Da Hong Pao Red Robe, Fog Island Sencha from Japan and Chinese Pu Erh. The tea flavour is dominated by the Red Robe Oolong, with it's distinctive toasty, almost mellow pipe tobacco note and ripe fruit aftertaste. The delicate notes of the Sencha, whilst somewhat subdued by the other teas, adds a fresh edge to the cup, with the more earthy tones of the Pu Erh adding weight and body.

  5. Yin Zhen White Crystal

    Yin Zhen White Crystal

This rare and famous tea was first produced in 1796. It is extremely high in polyphenols, low in caffeine and has a light, subtle infusion. This is the finest of its kind and is made entirely of silvery buds covered in fine white hairs. It has been a challenge to find Yin Zhen this year, with adverse weather conditions adversely effecting the size of the already small crop. This tea has almost doubled in price in China and took much longer than usual to arrive, due to the floods in China. Our contacts in China however, always make sure we can offer some of the highest quality made and at a reasonable price. I have seen it selling elsewhere for £20 for 25g.

  6. Assam Mangalam Gold Black Tea

    Assam Mangalam Gold Black Tea

The Mangalam garden consistently produces teas of the highest quality and their best lots each year, though few in number will give a rich, ripe infusion with characteristics of malt, molasses and dried fruit with a fine body. The abundant golden tips help to add a silky, spicy quality and give the liquor a golden ring around the top of the dark amber colour as the tea cools. An indicator of true quality when we evaluate teas in our tasting room. Learn More

  7. Captain Tea's Well-Being Blend

    Captain Tea's Well-Being Blend

In addition to Fog Island Japanese Sencha and Chinese Pu Erh teas, which are currently being exposed to much ado in the press regarding their alleged benefits to weight loss, I have added my favourite, and I believe healthiest of teas, Gabalong 'Blue' Oolong. With the final addition of our Tea of Life White Tea for good measure, if there is anything in the health aspect of tea, we should have it covered here! The tea flavour is a mellow mix, with the distinctive note of caramel and vanilla of the Gabalong tea in the foreground. The delicate notes of the Sencha, whilst somewhat subdued by the other teas, adds a fresh edge to the cup, with the more earthy tones of the Pu Erh adding weight and body. Learn More

  8. Father's Time Black Tea

    Father's Time Black Tea

This is a tea to savour, whether as a treat for yourself or a gift from a loved one. We use a beautiful, golden tipped tea from the birthplace of tea Mount Meng Ding. It has a rich flavour, like cocoa and rose, almost Turkish Delight! This is balanced by a tea grown in primaeval forests in another province of China, near the Lancang River, that is smooth, toffee-like, with hints of sweet tobacco and honey. The third part has a complex flavour and an astonishing, floral and fruity fragrance. Perfect gift for Father's Day! Or just to say I love you! Even if it's to yourself! Learn More

  9. Japan Benifuuki Green Tea

    Japan Benifuuki Green Tea

The flavour is intense, full of honey and floral notes with some cool, mentholated, mineral tones. The leaf has a flatly worked, rough, deep green appearance, a cloudy yellow cup colour and the taste profile presents a full body with sweetness and a nuance of ripe plums as an aftertaste. The tea is extremely high in methylated catechin content, up to 100 times higher than other types, which is claimed to help combat hay fever, eczema and other seasonal allergies. Learn More
